The Symbol Trust works alongside people with learning disabilities and complex needs, to help create lives that are meaningful and fulfilling.
About Us
Since 2001, The Symbol Trust has worked to support people with learning disabilities to build skills, live independently, strengthen communication through speech and language therapy, engage in communities, and achieve life aspirations.
Over the years, we have helped create homes for more than 100 people, acting as a social landlord across Kent. We have furnished homes, reunited tenants, and helped people build lasting friendships. During cost‑of‑living crises, we have also supported green initiatives to help people live more sustainably.
Communication is central to everything we do. We work closely with speech and language therapists to provide tailored support, from week‑long residential camps for young people with Down syndrome, to one‑to‑one therapy and producing accessible easy‑read guides covering everyday topics.
We have created inclusive theatre companies, launched employment schemes, and developed a wide range of work‑learning and leisure opportunities that enable people to grow in confidence and connection.
In 2026, The Symbol Trust will open its latest employment venture in the heart of Maidstone, Kent. The Symbol Trust Treasure Trove will offer people with learning disabilities, volunteers, and those returning to work the opportunity to collect, curate, and resell second‑hand clothing in a welcoming, inclusive environment — building skills, confidence, and community.
Our Mission
The Symbol Trust wants to continue to build upon and support the valued inclusive work we undertake and create within Kent and the UK as a whole. We want to grow and expand the services and opportunities we can offer so that more people can enjoy and experience them.

Get Involved
The Symbol Trust funds people with learning disabilities to maximise their life chances, gain skills, live as independently as possible, to truly participate in their local communities and fulfil their life dreams. None of this can be achieved without well planned and creative support.
The opportunities that The Symbol Trust creates vary enormously depending on the individuals that we work with, in line with their needs and aspirations.
